Before Refinish Limited existed, there were almost 25 years on the tools and in the trade — from an award-winning apprentice to managing insurance-approved repair centres right across the UK.
1984: an apprenticeship, not a career plan
Refinish Limited's founder left school in 1984 and started an apprenticeship as a panel beater and paint sprayer — the trade he'd go on to spend his entire working life in.
It wasn't a slow start. He was recognised early as an award-winning apprentice, and by the time he'd become "time-served" — the trade's term for a fully qualified tradesman — he already had a reputation for doing the job properly, not just quickly.
From the workshop floor to running repair centres UK-wide
Years of hands-on trade experience, then another eight or nine managing some of the industry's larger operations — all before Refinish Limited existed.
Apprentice Panel Beater & Paint Sprayer
Started the trade in 1984, straight from school — training in both panel beating and paint spraying rather than specialising in one alone.
Award-Winning Apprentice, Then Time-Served
Recognised early for the quality of his work, before qualifying as a fully time-served tradesman.
Workshop Foreman
Promoted to lead the workshop floor — responsible not just for his own work, but for the standard of everyone else's.
Off the Tools, Into the Office
A spell away from the workshop floor, learning the operational and business side of running a repair centre from the inside.
IMI Certificate in Management
Gained qualified membership of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) by achieving their Certificate in Management — formalising the management skills already being put into practice on the workshop floor.
Bodyshop Manager
Took on full management of a repair centre, bringing the tools-and-office experience together.
Managing Insurance-Approved Repair Centres, UK-Wide
Over the following eight to nine years, managed several large repair centres across the UK — all insurance-approved, all held to the standards that come with that.
2008: Refinish Limited Founded
After almost 25 years in the trade and in management, he started Refinish Limited in Stirling — bringing that experience to a workshop of his own.
Forty years in, and still learning
Refinish Limited isn't standing still. The workshop that opened in 2008 keeps investing in new training, new equipment and new certifications, because a trade built on getting it right doesn't get to stop improving.
Most recently, that's meant qualifying to work on hybrid and electric vehicles — as EVs and hybrids become a bigger part of what's on the road in and around Stirling, we're making sure we're ready for them, not catching up after the fact.
It's the same approach that's been there since 1984: learn the trade properly, then keep learning.
